Spot Report:Montreal Pro-Coaltion Rally, Sat., Dec.6
admin @ December 8, 2008 # No Comment Yet
“Montreal, PQ, Canada - The Montreal rally was attended by over one thousand people. There was a mix of labor leaders who support the coalition, members of Quebec’s Union des Artistes which is the French language equivalent of SAG and Gilles Duceppe the leader of the Bloc Quebecois, the federal separatist party. Prime Minister Harper’s has used fear to suggest that the coalition is not legitimate because Canadians didn’t vote for a coalition during the last election which took place on October 14, 2008. However, since Harper’s party only won a minority and by the rules of Canadian democracy a minority government must receive the support of the majority of parliament to continue to exist, the coalition is in fact legally and democratically valid.”

Opinion:If You Vote Third Party and Elect McCain/Palin, This Is Who You Empower!
admin @ October 27, 2008 # One Comment
To underscore that voting third party or not voting at all will help elect McCain and Palin, and thereby re-empower the self-righteous ideologues who berated progressives, liberals, democrats, greens, libertarians, etc., for the past 8 years while their leaders were on board, I’ve asked my fantastic vlogger collaborator, Sharona L. Smith (VoiceOfAmericans2008), to compile a short video of some of the harassment we’ve endured.
Before you decide NOT to vote for Barack Obama, who I view as our most realistic HOPE to restore some sense of sanity to our rapidly failing world, I implore you to watch Sharona’s masterful 4+minute compilation of pro-Obama/pro-McCain confrontations… and more:

Scoop: Cindy Sheehan Reveals Plan for New Political Party, Reflects on Race Against Pelosi
admin @ October 7, 2008 # 2 Comments
Anti War activist and challenger for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Congressional Seat (CD 8, California), Cindy Sheehan has indicated her intention to launch a National political party after the U.S. Election of Nov. 4
Inspired in part by Mark Twain’s involvement in The American Anti Imperialst League (also chaired by Andrew Carnegie and former President Grover Cleveland, fyi) in reaction to the annexation of the Phillippines by the United States in the late 19th Century, Sheehan said that the party will have a progressive platform and that after Nov. 4, “no matter what happens, we need to consolidate the energy against Imperialism and work on building another party movement.”

Al Franken v Norm Coleman (and Al Gore): Sunday Night Live, Tuesday Night Reckoning
admin @ October 6, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Norm Coleman, incumbent Republican Senator faced SNL alum, Air America broadcaster, and DFL challenger Al Franken and Independence Party candidate at the end of a week that saw Franken polling ahead of Coleman in a solid 43-34 percent lead. Barkley makes up the rear with 18 percent. The poll of 1,084 likely voters conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, was released by the Star Minnesota Tribune Poll.
Coleman found himself on the defence for much of Sunday’s debate, the first of five scheduled meetings in one of this election cycle’s most-watched, and most expensive Senate races.
Coleman and Franken traded barbs, with Dean Barkley occasionally joining in to criticise Coleman on his continued support of the war in Iraq. Other issues such as the $700 billion bailout bill, education, and questionable ads run by the Coleman campaign were discussed.

Live Event Review:’The Shock Doctrine - Naomi Klein @ The Bloor Cinema, Toronto, Sept. 29/08
admin @ September 29, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Naomi Klein’s visit to the Bloor Cinema on Monday night in support of her latest book “The Shock Doctrine” couldn’t have been more timely or pertinent. We are in the midst of what Klein would describe as ‘disaster capitalism’ at its finest, with many of us worried that the greatest shocks of the US financial bailout crisis are yet to come.
Klein defines a state of shock as an event without a narrative - events that are perceived as too difficult for the average person to understand, and therefore don’t warrant any truthful or serious explanation. Instead, these events are co-opted by the government and big corporations who fill in the narrative for us with ideas, concerns, concepts and explanations that serve their needs, not ours.
